Bill Lightfoot

“Beneath the Surface"

Building Submarines in the Pacific Northwest during the early 1900’s

Bill Lightfoot was born in Seattle and has lived much of his life in the Northwest.  Early fascination with steamboats and ferries engendered a life-long enthusiasm for things nautical.  During World War II he sailed for three years in the merchant marine, a career that culminated as Third Officer aboard a Liberty troopship.  During the Korean War, he served in the Army.

After graduating in engineering, Bill married and raised three children while pursuing a variety of engineering and construction activities.  When opportunity presented, he sailed his thirty-foot Tahiti ketch on Northwest waters.  In later years he has enjoyed researching maritime history, and is an active member of Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society.
